The Japanese became the target of the first Atomic weapons ever used in history, and their earth shaking effects changed the face of warfare forever, helping to eliminate major war as an option for the world's Great Powers. The Soviet Union took note in this as well, backing away from Japan and allowing the United States a buffer against further expansion from the Soviet Union. In this way, the Soviets decided to retreat for the day, leaving Japan to instead concentrate on developing it's own Atomic weapons and try to gain the edge over the United States in the game of Tug Of War that was the Cold War.
